10 RESOURCES FOR LEADING AS A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST

As men, we’re often placed in leadership roles—at work, at home, or in our communities—but we may not have had clear examples of what it looks like to lead as a follower of Christ. Christian leadership stands in contrast to the world’s: it's marked by humility, not power; servanthood, not self-interest; reliance on God’s strength, not our own. It’s leadership for his glory, not our own.

As experienced leaders know, the right word at the right time can change everything. But how do we know we’re turning to trustworthy sources? 2 Timothy 3:16–17 tells us that all Scripture is useful for teaching and equipping us for every good work—including leadership. The following resources are grounded in biblical wisdom and offer encouragement, insight, and tools for leading with Christ at the center.

1. Dad Tired and Loving It by Jerrad Lopes

One of our favorites! Leadership starts at home—but that can feel intimidating when you’re already drained from the daily grind. Jerrad Lopes reminds us that spiritual leadership isn’t about having it all together, but about daily dependence on Jesus. This book equips dads to lead their families with grace, courage, and gospel-centered intentionality, even when they feel unqualified.

2. Lead Like It Matters by Craig Groeschel

Craig Groeschel’s Lead Like It Matters is packed with practical wisdom for men who want to make an eternal difference in every sphere of life. Though written for church leaders, the seven principles in this book apply just as much to leading your family, team, or community. For men seeking to lead as followers of Christ, this book is a guide for leading with purpose.

3. Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund

We like this book so much that one of our groups is going through it together. Not a traditional leadership book—but a great read for the heart of a godly leader. If you’re feeling weary, discouraged, or frustrated, this book reorients you to the heart of Christ—gentle, gracious, and always near. It helps men lead from a place of compassion and humility, shaped by the character of Jesus himself.

4. The Emotionally Healthy Leader by Peter Scazzero

You can’t lead others well if you don’t lead yourself well. Scazzero helps men confront emotional baggage, build healthy rhythms, and lead from a place of inner wholeness and deep connection with Christ. Whether you’re a pastor, entrepreneur, or father, this book will challenge and equip you to lead with emotional and spiritual integrity.

5. Habits of the Household by Justin Whitmel Earley

Ordinary routines—mealtime, bedtime, discipline—can become moments of spiritual formation. This book casts a vision for gospel-shaped leadership at home. With honesty and practical insight, Earley shows how the daily habits you model as a husband and father form the spiritual culture of your home.

6. Failing Forward by John C. Maxwell

What is your perception and response to failure? Most people aren’t well-prepared to deal with or leverage failure—they fear it, misunderstand it, and run away from it. In Failing Forward, Maxwell unpacks the reasons people fail, how to master a fear of failure, and how to leverage the benefits of negative experiences. Learn how to overcome fear, build resilience, and move forward with confidence.

Why Godly Men Pursue Wisdom Over Knowledge

As men, we often pride ourselves on what we know. We devour books and podcasts, sharpen our skills, and chase information, believing it will make us stronger, more capable, more complete. And yet, even as knowledge helps us achieve more, many of us still feel a nagging emptiness inside. Why? Because knowledge alone was never meant to be our highest pursuit. It sharpens the mind, but it doesn’t shape the heart. It helps us make a living, but it can’t teach us how to truly live. What every man needs is godly wisdom — the kind that not only informs our decisions but transforms our character. Without it, we end up smart but not steady, informed but not truly wise. Knowledge may provide us good information, but wisdom is what helps us apply it. The truth is simple but life-changing: Wisdom will always take us further than knowledge – and here’s why:

The Fight for Holiness: Why Christian Men Need Brotherhood

As Christian men, we’re in a battle. Not one marked by bullets, but by soul-threatening enemies like temptation, spiritual apathy, fear, and isolation. The war we fight is unseen, but the stakes are eternal, making it all the more critical that we surround ourselves with brothers who refuse to let any man fall behind.

Why Godly Friendship Is Essential for Spiritual Growth

Maybe you’ve been there — full calendar, empty soul. You’re surrounded by people at work, church, and home, yet you feel isolated and perhaps even unknown. As men, we’re quick to exchange handshakes and conversation about our interests and hobbies, but when it comes to building soul-level connections, many of us keep our distance. It feels too risky, so we settle for shallow — and we suffer for it. But God’s vision for masculine friendship calls us to go deeper. It’s not just about company; it’s about commitment. It’s not just about hanging out, but helping one another become more like Christ. Scripture gives us a picture of brotherhood where men sharpen each other, speak truth in love, stand firm through hardship, and refuse to let one another drift.
