About The Podcast

For over two decades, Dan Rogers has served the congregation at River of Life Church in Hamilton, Georgia. While he never demanded that his two sons follow him into ministry, his son Braden found that calling on his own. With Father’s Day around the corner, “Pastor Dan” and Braden talk with Redeemed founder Paul Amos about building and maintaining a church, balancing the demands of ministry and family, and what they’ve learned from one another.

Discussion

  1. Have you ever prayed to God for guidance in a major life decision? What problem were you facing, and what made it so difficult? Did God give you an answer? If so, how did you hear him speaking to you—loudly, with a grand gesture, or more softly, with subtle signs that were left for you to interpret? Proverbs 3:5-6, James 1:5
  2. Has there ever been a period of your life when you were in “cruise control,” putting in bare-minimum effort in your job, family, or circle of friends because you thought you had things pretty well figured out and got complacent? Did anyone ever call you out on it? Did any part of your life suffer because of the lack of effort or attention? Revelation 3:15-16
  3. Have you ever had a close friendship with a preacher’s kid? (Or are you one yourself?) In what ways did you sense that the child’s life was different from your own? Or, if you’re a PK, how did your life differ from your friends’ lives?
  4. How much pressure did your father put on you to go into the same line of work he was in? Did you end up working in the same career, or even in the same family business? If, have you found fulfillment in that path? If you did not follow your father, what kind of friction did that create in your family? If you could go back and make a different choice from the one you made, would you? Proverbs 22:6
  5. Did it surprise you to hear Dan say that even a man of God has to put his marriage and family before work? Did that cause you to look at your own priorities differently? 1 Timothy 3:4-5
  6. Have you ever worked in a position where you had a close or even familial relationship with your boss or the person who hired you? Did that affect how your co-workers treated you? Did you feel you had to work harder to prove that you’d earned the job on your own merits? How long did you stay in that job? If you’ve left, what prompted you to seek other opportunities? If you’ve stayed, what keeps you in your position?
  7. Braden says he’s an introvert and a details guy, while his father is an extroverted, big-picture thinker. In what ways is your personality similar to or different from your father’s personality? Do you think your differences complemented each other well, or did they cause conflict? Of the talents and traits you have, which ones do you think your dad appreciated the most? Were there any you feel he didn’t appreciate enough? Romans 12:4-6
  8. Has there ever been a time in your life when you tried to deal with a major problem or inner conflict alone? Were your efforts successful? If not, when did you decide you needed the help of others, and who did you turn to? What advice or insight did they offer that helped you find a solution to your problem? What about the way they delivered advice was helpful to you? Psalm 34:17-18
