The Greatest Gift Ever Given
As Christmas quickly descends upon us, let us celebrate the true reason for the season! As we decorate our homes, shop online and in person,, and prepare bountiful feasts, it becomes a challenge to slow down, tune out the clutter, and ponder the true meaning of Christmas. To begin, let us turn to the Word and celebrate with gratitude for the greatest gift ever given. Every baby born is a miracle, and every child is a gift from God. But over two thousand and twenty years ago, the miracle of miracles occurred. A baby was born, but He was not any normal child—He was our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
- “And the angel said unto them, ‘Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.’ ”
—Luke 2:10–11
God demonstrates His true love to us through the gift of His son. The “greatest gift of all time” not only brought the message of God, but it also insured our salvation.
- “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
—John 3:16
How can we not rejoice in all that God has done for us? Just for believing in Him, we have been given eternal life. Thirty years later, Jesus himself proclaims to us in the book of John that He was sent here by the Father. He also lets us know that He has come to reshape the world, bringing peace to us.
- “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but He sent me.”
—John 8:42 - “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
—John 16:
"In all things, I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ " —Acts 20:35
How can we possibly accept such a gift and not want to pay it forward? God commands us to be generous any way we can, because we know through God’s word that it is better to give than receive, and giving comes with a refreshed spirit.
- “In all things, I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
—Acts 20:35 - “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
—Proverbs 11:25
So no matter what you’re facing this Christmas, no matter how difficult your circumstances might seem, you have already been given the greatest gift of all. We can take great solace in the fact that that our salvation is secure by believing in Him, and that God accepts us no matter what we have done. Through Jesus’ presence on this earth, death upon the cross, and resurrection, we have all been redeemed. Rejoice and share the good news! The greatest gift of all time continues to give us all the grace and love we could ever need.
